Memory Matters
is an Educational Psychology Assessment Service, run by Jeanette Carlsson, Chartered Educational Psychologist and Mark Cooper, Cogmed coach and English teacher.
The practice is the first practice in the UK to have been a Licensed provider of Cogmed Working Memory Training and has been providing this training in the UK since 2005. Memory Matters provides both the Adult (QM) and the child (RM) versions of Cogmed Working Memory Training and provides 2 different levels of services:
DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE:
• Difficulties following instructions?
• Difficulties maintaining concentration and focus?
• Difficulties with reading comprehension and/or writing composition?
If so, the chances are that your child has a weak working memory.
Research studies have shown that 80% of children improve their working
memory after training. Working memory is related to many aspects of
education and is closely linked to general ability or intelligence.
- The Traditional Coach Model (TCM)
This is based on the traditional delivery model and consists of an initial screening interview, which can be done over the telephone, to determine that the presenting difficulties are likely to respond to the training and that the person has enough time and space in their current life situation to undertake the training. The coach will also speak directly with the child and involve him/her fully in the programme. This is followed by 5 weekly coaching calls to provide feedback on the progress and encouragement and where any issues that have arisen during the week can be discussed. Finally an evaluation discussion is undertaken and a brief written report is provided.

- The Parent as Coach Model (PAC) or Independent Training
This is a relatively new development and this starts out in the same way as the TCM but instead of 5 weekly calls, there is one detailed telephone conversation after the first week of training with the parent, if a child is training. There is no direct involvement with the child and the parent acts as the main coach and motivator for their own child. If an adult is training, the conversation will take place with the person who is training and we will together look at the results in detail and discuss what has gone well and what might need to be changed. After this discussion the parent or the adult training monitors their own training although the coach can be contacted by email or telephone if any other issues arise during the training but there are no further scheduled calls. At the end of the training there is also an evaluation conversation and we can discuss how to make the best use of the Extension training sessions. Included with all training are 100 Extension sessions, which are based on 4 exercises and which take about 15 minutes to complete. They can be accessed as and how the person would like to use them within 12 months after completion of the original training.
It is also possible to arrange a personal start up meeting and the possibility of measuring working memory capacity and other cognitive functioning before and after the training. This can be discussed at the initial meeting.
-Other Services Provided
In addition to providing the Cogmed programme, Memory Matters also undertakes educational psychology assessments for a wide range of purposes, including assessment of specific learning difficulties like dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD. In the case of dyspraxia, information from an Occupational Therapist is often required and with the case of ADHD, consultation with the child’s GP or Paediatrician would normally be required. Assessment for the purposes of identification of gifted and talented pupils can also be undertaken as can Access Arrangements for formal exams.
Sometimes an assessment report is required for an appeal for an 11+ decision and this can also be arranged.
Other more specific assessments can also be undertaken including the use of the Automated Working Memory Assessment.
Memory Matters works with both adults and children from the age of 6 years and upwards.
